Cone Khotto/ Cone Idli /Idli Steamed in Jackfruit Leaves ~ Khotto is a very popular breakfast in Udupi, Mangalore, Kundapur homes. Idlis are steamed in jackfruit leaves (shaped baskets or cone) during special occasion or festivals in Konkani homes. Such kind of idlis prepared in jackfruit leaves are called khotto or hittu in Konkani and khotte kadubu in Kannada which are usually topped with coconut oil and served with coconut chutney or sambar.

Recipe: 

Ingredients: 

  • Urad Dal - 1 Cup
  • Rice        -  2 ½ cups - Raw rice / Idli rice
  • Salt

Soak urad dal (1 cup) & rice (2 ½ cups - raw rice / idli rice) separately for atleast 5 hours. Grind it separately. The consistency should be smooth. Mix these & add salt. Keep this mixed batter over night.

Now to Make Cone; the cone is prepared with a single (big) Jackfruit leaf. Wash the Jackfruit leaves & wipe them. Take one leaf & Make/ fold it into a cone shape. Tie it with sharp broomstick/ toothpick. Pour idli batter into this cone. Place into a steel glass. Steam this in a steamer for 20 minutes.
